This paper, based on ethnographic research undertaken by a social operator in the Ile-de-France region, sets out to analyse the use of quantifiable data by professionnals, beginning with Durkheim’s notion of obligation. Firtstly it attempts to elucidate the resistance and subversion of numbers which fail to impose themselves on the judgement and the decisions of professionals. In order to understand the reasons for this resistance and why actors are forcing themselves to mobilise these figures or not, the article then moves on to attempting to understand the moral dissociation having taken place with the organisational changes of the operator. Although these two moral judgements are conflicting, they are not fixed and attached exclusively to certain professional practices. The one may impose itself on the other when the participants believe their actions to be an obstacle to their solidarity or to the good of the person being accompanied.
