The signing of a work of art considered under the legal angle raises several series of questions. First it must be associated with the birth of the piece. What effect is attached to signing? If that act generally signals that the work is finished, it doesn’t necessarily means that the author wishes to display it to the public. Finishing, displaying, these two moments, even intimately related, don’t always coincide. And the fact of displaying,, as evidence of the author’s will, is a determining factor in the legal status of the work. The signature also puts the truth of the work to the test, the indestructible link between the author and his creation, that not even he can undo. The law doesn’t leave much room for fiction. However, the connections between signature and authenticity are sometimes clouded, particularly in contemporary creation.
