Noting the haunting presence of the Great War in Jacques Tardi’s comic strip books, this article studies the genesis of his work in order to highlight the initial intermingling between subject and medium of expression, and, thus, leads us to a better understanding of the stakes of his work. From his early books to Putain de guerre! (2008-2009), the subject of World War I – a real food for thought – imposed itself and evolved under his pen and quill, conveying a history of the conflict vacillating between documentary account and imaginary reconstruction, built from both his own family history and his libertarian ideological orientation.
