The ghost of the Roma people

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2018. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Gabriela Lupu’s Porte de Paris collection depicts a Roma slum with without actually showing it. The starting point is the intimacy of the shed in which a Roma family live in a vacant lot in Saint-Denis. The artist’s drawings represent the objects on the walls as well as everyday life on small sheets of paper (4 by 6 inches). In her workshop, these were translated into shapes with paper and wire, then set on a makeshift stage, and finally photographed. Each scene is captured in black and white. Objects and situations can only be identified thanks to the caption. This selection of nine photographs comes with a short preface and an even shorter afterword by Éric Fassin that analyze, through the aesthetics of this artistic project that represents invisibility, the Roma specter that haunts contemporary European societies.
