In Spain, Gitanxs (or Gitanos) are both over- and under- represented on television. This social group usually appears only in association with violent crime related to drugs and theft, or conversely with flamenco music. However, two recent shows, Palabra de gitano and Los gipsy kings, have focused on such families; the former show claiming to belong in the documentary genre, the latter as reality television. This article analyzes the representation of people identified as Gitanxs in both shows, emphasizing the anti-gypsyism, racism, sexism, and homophobia of their storylines and characters, as well as a form of agency on the part of actors and actresses who at times manage to escape the format imposed by the media.
