“Laughing at La Baïonnette, but trembling in fear of actual bayonets”

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2019. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : La Baïonnette can be considered the most emblematic satirical publication of the First World War. The violence of the drawings, intended for the general public, corresponded to what people were witnessing on a large scale. Founded on January 23, 1915 by Henri Maigrot, known as “Henriot,” the weekly newspaper’s title was originally À la Baïonnette!, and remained so for twenty-three issues. It paved the way for similar graphic productions to be introduced into the satirical press. It was as though the national divisions inscribed in the pre-war divergences had to suddenly disappear in a sort of iconic synthesis. This tendency intensified during the First World War, when patriotic, physical, and symbolic mobilization turned toward the capital—both the point of convergence of recruits and the main target of the surging enemy.
