Based on a study of the written and radio archives of the project “Radio Solitude en Cévennes” set up by France Culture in September 1976, this article explores the way in which rural margins were recorded and broadcast on a channel devoted to high culture in the mid-1970s. “Radio Solitude en Cévennes” was a temporary radio experiment. It gave a voice to the anonymous inhabitants of this isolated and depopulated rural area. The analysis of the interactions between locals and journalists of France Culture questions the construction of the representation of rural marginality and its perception through listening.
