To understand the cultural history of the field of comics, one must take into account national specificities such as the publishing context, cultural traditions, and representations of national identity. However, the variety and complexity of exchanges between the two countries support a truly transnational reading of the field. Based on the example of the so-called “British Invasion” of comics, this article demonstrates how transnational exchanges provide a backdrop for the development of the mainstream comic book industry in the United States at the end of the twentieth century.
