Given to the Belgian State Archives in Tournai in 2008, the archives of the publishing and printing company Casterman contain numerous traces (correspondence, catalogs, sales statistics, etc.) of the production of a major stakeholder in French-language comics. While the lack of an inventory makes the work of historians more difficult, the investigation of these archives offers an understanding of changes in the comic book market. Indeed, Casterman’s archives highlight the publisher’s role in the construction and success of The Adventures of Tintin. These documents also tell us about the reasons behind Casterman’s turn toward comics for adults with the launch of (À Suivre) in 1978 and offer insight into the magazine’s business model.
