This article seeks to determine the role of the aesthetic ideal in the art of gardening since the first Persian gardens (called paradeisos) and to answer the question: What is the place of beauty in contemporary garden making? Although beauty is no longer at the core of modern garden creation, which is often focused on ecology rather than aesthetics, it stills guides the gardener in the attempt to build “a little world, a little perfect world,” as novelist and poet Vita Sackville-West defines the garden.
