The institutional practice setting is often designated by professionals as a hindrance or obstacle. We have taken an interest in the relation between each practitioner and their team, as well as in the institutional dimension of their practice. We are able to show that difficulties encountered in the institutional sphere often evidence the reactivation of relational indifferentiation elements that come from each professional’s personal and transgenerational history. These elements re-emerge within the horizontal and vertical ties that characterize the institutional field in which the professional works, and on which these elements are projected. In this way, difficulties experienced within this work context may represent strong sources of elaboration, contributing to transformation and growth in professionals. Moreover, we show that the institutional setting is a place of “unburdening” and transformation for certain people and families. Their trajectory calls for a complex and structured device rather than a dual relationship in order to make it possible for their relational knots to be projected. Therefore, support from the institutional setting may be a resource for professionals as well as for families who advance side by side in coevolution, if the elaboration of these different levels of projection is made possible.
