Building a Totem Pole in Family Therapy

In family therapy with single-parent families, the therapist suggests to the children to create a totem, inspired by the famous totem poles erected by the Haïdas, one of the native people of Alaska. The child may use animals’ figures to represent the ancestors. This experience introduces a symbolic dimension of intergenerational relationships. The result of this technique seems encouraging. The article exposes a case study and examines the common points with other techniques allowing an active inclusion of children in the therapy.
