It is not unusual to see children who have managed to survive violence and humiliation by promising themselves a better life someday. This promise, acting as an invisible support for resilience, allows them to imagine a better tomorrow, a future independent of their past. Unfortunately it happens that this promise becomes a source of insensitivity; a lack of understanding for others’ suffering. In those instances, recognizing the suffering that one has not been able to avoid or has instigated equals a loss of self-esteem. This is when professionals need to demonstrate their commitment; to be the mediators who can be relied upon to establish a therapeutic relationship.
