Multiple family therapy involves regrouping several families around a specific pathology or problem in a therapeutic context. Its first applications (1950–1960) dealt primarily with chronic severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar illness. This therapeutic modality, which is still poorly known in France, was recently adapted to the inpatient after-care of child and adolescent anorexia nervosa at Robert Debré Hospital, and more specifically to help adolescents at risk of relapse or chronicization and/or families that did not fare well with individual family therapy during inpatient treatment. The article presents this novel therapeutic program, its theoretical foundation, goals, and themes, along with three “techniques” specifically designed for multiple family therapy. A case study illustrates these various points.
