Contemporary Child Psychiatry and the Family

Reviewing the field of child psychiatry, the authors observe that the family is more and more marginalized in this discipline. The influence of the biomedical model leads to the biologization and the overspecialization of this field with the risk of neglecting psychosocial factors. It is suggested to broaden the diagnostic range by meeting the family at the time of the evaluation of the child and using an integrative approach in order to rehabilitate the family. In places where specialized clinical assessments are already used, adding clinical family therapy helps link the family to secondary and tertiary care.
