In his political doctrine, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon (1809-1965) has developed an educational theory grounded on the “workshop school” organization. Refusing the liberal-inspired reform of the so-called free and mandatory school, his conception seeks, by linking manual and intellectual work, to form complete human beings, to cultivate all their capacities, to free them from oppression, exploitation and alienation, and to give back to communes and families the control over education. One finds this idea, half a century later, in Freinet’s works. The texts presented are taken from The General Idea of the Revolution in the Nineteenth Century and from On the Political Capacity of the Working Classes.
