Becoming a Parent: A Peculiar Metamorphosis

This article illustrates the process of transformation that an adult goes through when s/he becomes a parent. It draws on clinical situations experienced during consultations at the Infant Section of our clinic, on the testimonials of parents known to us, and—even if we do not cite them, only directing readers to them—on blogs and comic books that set out to describe contemporary parenthood in a manner that is both humorous and caustic. What may seem like a natural transformation is in fact the result of a complex psychological venture, one offering its own dangers and pitfalls, but also its possibilities for enabling evolution. What needs to be borne in mind whenever we meet with a family is the process in which the parents are involved and the investment that this represents for them.
