Reflecting representations of the history of—and relations with—the “other”, the textbook is above all a mirror of the society in which it was designed. It reveals the available knowledge, but also the stereotypes carried in a given society. This article analyzes texts and illustrations of history textbooks, examining the conceptions and images of Islam and Arabs that are conveyed and transmitted to students. By analyzing the themes evoked or omitted by the textbooks, and by showing through a few selected examples how each is presented, this article reveals the presence and persistence of stereotypes.
