An external third party for elderly couples: The externalization of a neurodegenerative disease as a therapeutic lever to support the marital relationship

We will discuss in this article how a neurodegenerative disease interferes in the life of a couple as an external third party. Based on three clinical situations, we report on a new clinical practice in gerontology inspired by narrative therapies, namely the externalization of the problem through the use of floating objects (Caillé and Rey 2004). Hortense will show us the positive impact of the externalization process on a married couple. Paul will illustrate the power of the external third party to bring about a mutation in the married couple’s relationship. Finally, we will see with Agathe that couples may adopt a defensive position against the external third party by choosing to withdraw.
