Airline unions have long presented emblematic cases of corporate unionism, through the pilots, stewardesses’ and stewards’ unions. Since their origin (circa 1945), cabin crew have been struggling to gain recognition for their security role, and therefore ensure their professional recognition and salary. Stewardesses must overcome a “glamor image”, reducing it to a commercial service, including among their fellow pilots. The association with pilots nevertheless appeared “natural” at this time, and put forward a “license” for stewardesses, formalizing this connection based on a shared security role. During the past decade, faced with the European liberal offensive, categorial cabin crew unions, despite their recent breakup, struggled together for a “European license” related to this security role. The mobilization of categorial logic aims to exceed organizational breakdown, resulting of the dispersion of former professional unions and the application of new laws on representativeness in France.
