Being a female surfer in Morocco

Being a female Moroccan surfer in Morocco involves negotiating with social and cultural standards as well as the eyes of men who are mainly unfavorable to this practice. Carrying a discourse which shows the alternation of social and symbolic profits with forms of depreciation, the surfers we interviewed all turn out to have been exposed to singular early socializations in surfing practices. Their male peers and the family sphere (the fathers and the brothers) are the privileged canals of socialization. By analyzing female surfers’ trajectories, the feminine practices of surfing in Morocco and the masculine discourses about them, we analyze the incorporation of the values of the Moroccan society through bodily incorporation and gender relationships.
