A Draft History of the French in Israel

Based on largely unpublished data from the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics and a series of interviews carried out between October 1999 and June 2000, the author establishes a statistical portrait of French emigration to Israel. He also analyzes the strategies that the group developed to forge its own identity in the country without going against its raison d'être, i.e. becoming Israeli. The "Israeli Francophonie"notion that defines the group is complex: It is a synthesis between a Jacobin-Zionist model, oriented towards the Israeli society and which gives a place to the restoration of "Hebraism," and a more outward-looking model in which Francophonie becomes a memory to perpetuate.
