This research belongs to the history of Franco-Spanish international sporting and cultural relations. Based on French diplomatic sources and elements from both Spanish and French press coverage, this article analyzes the football match between Spain and France that took place in Seville on March 15, 1942, and the political intentions of partisans of both Francoism and the Vichy government. It shows how this sporting event served as a propaganda tool for Franco’s Spain and as a means of diplomatic rapprochement for the Vichy regime during the Second World War. While the match had a positive effect on Franco’s image in the short term, its impact on Franco-Spanish bilateral relations was ultimately limited.
