The Society of the Spectacle was first a French book, which gave birth to a number of translations as well as a film adaptation. It was so successful that today its title has become part of everyday language. How can we explain the fact that this critical study of French society penned by Guy Debord in 1967 went on to make history both in France and abroad? This article will attempt to answer this question by relying on a cultural history perspective, successively analysing the phases of production, diffusion and reception of this innovative theory, both in form and content.
