This article explores the important links between two closely interconnected events that have traditionally been analysed separately by historians: the First World War and the Mexican Revolution. In April 1917, revolutionary Mexico faced the possibility of going to war, shortly after the proclamation of its new Constitution. Like other Latin American nations, the country saw a “war of the minds” play out between neutralists and defenders of the Entente Powers or the Central Powers. This article analyses the contradictory positions held by various revolutionary elites during the Great War, including the President of the Republic, members of the Constituent Congress, the press, public intellectuals and student movements.
