This introduction to the special issue focuses on the recent proliferation of discourses on the value of music. We show that discourses on the value of music underpin analyses on music, and that discourses on the supposed declining value of music are embedded within specific perspectives that are aimed to identify trends that do not necessarily reflect the richness of a musical object that is now largely democratized and subjectively invested.
