Self-determination for persons with extensive disabilities through direct payments for personal assistance

This article presents personal assistance within the perspective of the movement for Independent Living. This is the cornerstone of self-determination for the dependent person, since personal assistance is at the heart of any project for Independent Living. Public policies on making money available for disabled people enables them to choose their service provider at any time or decide to become an individual employer. Criteria for evaluation of the quality of assistance are offered and explained. The example of the Swedish policy on personal assistance is presented.
