This article aims to analyze one of the specificities of social work professions by placing them within the broader framework of so-called “relationship” professions or professions “orientated toward others” (Piot), namely the co-construction of professional activity with the user/person being supported. In particular, the article analyzes: the need to take into account the “conception of the other” in carrying out the activity; the construction of professional knowledge that is essentially shared; and the way in which supported persons participate “in reverse” in the professional development of social workers as the activity progresses. The article is divided into two parts: first, the author attempts to specify what he considers to be the main specificities of the so-called “relationship” professions; second, he discusses a few examples of research that confirm the idea that professionals can learn from users.
