Covid-19: An eye-opener on the social treatment of old age

The crisis has revealed values, ways of thinking and acting that usually touch the surface of the social. Old age and its schematic portrait have generated reactions aggregated at the two poles of the affective axis, revealing the singular relationship maintained with it.The idea of age-specific confinement was carried by political actors, personalities and the publicized vox populi. Considering the elderly as a singular group, homogeneous and dissociable from the rest of society opens up a questioning of political and social ethics. Inactivity, uselessness and vulnerability will be questioned.If all crises lead to fear of social conflict, the announcement of a war of generations has fully played this role. Constraints and shortages lead frustrations, losses affecting the quality of life and questioning arbitration procedures.In this syndemic situation, the elderly have found themselves at the crossroads of two epidemics, Covid-19 and the aging of the population which has all its characteristics with its noisy, unspeakable and innumerable symptoms, and its place between social imagination and contemporary reality: illness and death, fear, relegation, confrontation, the scapegoat…
