RÉSUMÉCet article se propose d’étudier l’évolution du système urbain algérien. L’Algérie a hérité de la période coloniale un espace territorial fortement structuré et orienté vers le littoral méditerranéen. Il en est résulté des tendances lourdes privilégiant le développement des grands centres urbains au nord du pays. Ces tendances ne masquent-t-elles pas, cependant, l’existence de modifications substantielles dans la répartition du peuplement et dans l’organisation du système urbain ? Ne se dessine-t-il pas en Algérie des tendances d’évolution susceptibles de corriger les déséquilibres hérités de la période coloniale ? Quelles mesures et dispositions en matière d’aménagement sont-elles susceptibles de favoriser les changements perceptibles ? Quelles répercussions peuvent avoir, sur la répartition spatiale de la population, l’arrêt des investissements publics d’une part et l’insécurité qui règne dans les zones rurales (combats, massacres, racket, etc.) d’autre part ?

ABSTRACTThis paper looks at the evolution of the Algerian urban system. From the colonial period, Algeria inherited a highly structured territorial space oriented towards the Mediterranean coast. This resulted in strong trends in favour of the development of the major urban centres in the north of the country. However, might these trends not conceal substantial changes to the distribution of settlement and the organisation of the urban system? Are trends not emerging in Algeria that might correct the imbalances inherited from the colonial period? What regional development measures and provisions are likely to foster perceptible changes? What repercussions might the end of public investment on the one hand and the violence (fighting, massacres, extortion, etc.) in rural areas on the other have on the spatial distribution of the population?
