The notions of the « Aristotelian » and the « non-Aristotelian » appear regularly in Brecht’s theoretical texts. Nowadays they are used in a global, non critical and simplifying way, and therefore they must be scrutinized. This article is a philological and historical examination of these questions in the light of the Poetics and its reception in Western literatures since the Renaissance. Brecht uses this liminal text to build and present his own system didactically within this context. The principle of an increasingly radical opposition is the foundations of his defining process. It creates a perspective that is at the same time antireligious (materialistic), philosophical (anti-metaphysical), aesthetic (for the active role of the spectator and against empathy) and social (“revolutionary” in the sense of “producing change”).

Die Begriffe « aristotelisch » und « nicht aristotelisch » begegnen immer wieder in Brecht’s theoretischen Texten. Heute werden sie pauschal und kritiklos-vereinfachend gebraucht – was Nuancen und Präzisierungen notwendig macht. Vorliegender Aufsatz schlägt eine philologisch-historische Untersuchung dieses Fragenkomplexes vor aufgrund der Poetik und deren Rezeption in den westeuropäischen Literaturen seit der Renaissance. Daraus erhellt, dass Brecht sich des Urtextes als Folie und Gegensatz bedient, um sein eigenes System aufzubauen und didaktisch zu präsentieren. Das Prinzip einer immer radikaler werdenden Opposition liegt diesem Definitionsprozess zugrunde. Offensichtlich wird so nach und nach eine kohärente Perspektive, die zugleich als antireligiös (« materialistisch »), philosophisch (« antimetaphysisch »), ästhetisch (gegen die Einfühlung und für die aktive Rolle des Zuschauers) und sozial (« revolutionär » im Sinne von « Veränderungen bewirkend ») angesehen werden darf.
