Walser’s love of the theater dates back to his youth. This paper aims to show that Walser’s drama stages a literal un-folding of the tongue. The ‘tongue’ is both the organ in the mouth and language. It is the ground upon which the figures, the characters, find their feet. The Fairy Tale Dramolettes, for instance, rest on the material of fairy tales, continually told anew, as do the tragedies on myth. The dynamics of a text by Walser consist in the solidity of words being unleashed. This manipulation of a language always on the point of turning into stammering is linked to the Freudian idea of the joke.

Walsers Begeisterung für das Theater wurzelt in seiner Jugend. Ziel des Beitrags ist zu zeigen, dass Walsers Theater die wortwörtliche Ent-wicklung der Zunge zur Schau stellt. Die Zunge ist zugleich Organ und Sprache. Sie bildet den Grund, auf dem die Figuren Fuß fassen können. So stützen sich die Märchendramolette auf dem immer wieder erzählten Märchenstoff wie die Tragödien auf dem Mythos. Die Textdynamik besteht bei Walser darin, dass der Dichte der Wörter freier Lauf gelassen wird. Diese Handhabung einer leicht ins Stottern geratenden Sprache wird mit dem Freud’schen Witz in Verbindung gebracht.
