In 1916-1917, Carry van Bruggen (1881-1932) contributed stories, articles of current interest, literary criticism and essays in the domain of literary and cultural history to De Amsterdamsche Dameskroniek. She developed a socio-historical approach based on the idea that literary works reflect the “spirit” of their time, foreshadowing Prometheus (1919), her grand treatise on the “development of individualism in literature”. Literary history and criticism contribute to a reflection on the position of women in western society and their role in the “process of liberation” of the individual.

In 1916 en 1917 publiceerde Carry van Bruggen (1881-1932) in De Amsterdamsche Dameskroniek verhalen, actualiteitsartikelen, letterkundige kritieken en literair- en cultuurhistorische essays. Zij ontwikkelde een historisch-sociologische benadering op basis van het idee dat literaire werken de “tijdgeest” weerspiegelen, vooruitlopend op Prometheus (1919), haar grote verhandeling over de “ontwikkeling van het individualisme in de litteratuur”. Literatuurgeschiedenis en literaire kritiek dragen bij aan een bespiegeling over de positie van vrouwen in de westerse maatschappij en hun rol in het “vrijmakingsproces” van het individu.
