Cet article propose une relecture de l’histoire des courbes d’apprentissage, une technologie managériale reposant sur l’existence d’une corrélation entre accumulation d’expérience et variation des coûts de production, et ayant eu un impact considérable sur l’évolution des théories et des pratiques du management. Il s’intéresse en particulier au lien unissant le développement et la diffusion de cette technologie et le contexte de la guerre. Il montre ainsi comment cette technologie, née de l’envol de l’industrie aéronautique dans l’entre-deux-guerres, est devenue une véritable « arme de guerre » pendant le second conflit mondial, en permettant de rationaliser et d’anticiper l’effort industriel nécessaire à la victoire. Ses développements ultérieurs, de son succès croissant pendant les Trente Glorieuses à sa « crise » au cours des années 1970, sont mis en miroir de la trajectoire de l’industrie américaine, et de sa sortie progressive d’un cycle caractérisé par le maintien de structures héritées d’un contexte de guerre.

A history of the learning curve: the ups and downs of a wartime managerial technology in peace timeThis paper studies the history of the “learning curves”, a managerial technology based on an assumed correlation between experience accumulation and variation in production costs that has had a considerable impact on the evolution of management theories and practices. It particularly focuses on the link between the development and diffusion of this technology and the context of the war. It shows how this technology, which emerged from the rapid development of the aeronautical industry in the interwar period, became a true “weapon of war” during World War II, enabling rationalization and anticipation of the war effort. Its subsequent developments, from its growing success during the post-war boom to its “crisis” in the 1970s, mirror the trajectory of American industry as it gradually freed itself from a cycle that was characterized by the maintenance of structures inherited from the war.
