Dans cet article, nous analysons les craintes et les espoirs suscités par l’automatisation, tels qu’ils se reflètent dans la culture populaire depuis l’invention du terme « robot » jusqu’à l’engouement médiatique actuel. Ces espoirs et ces craintes ont-ils changé ou sont-ils demeurés les mêmes ? Les changements ont-ils reflété les changements réels de la robotique ? Nous analysons comment ce sujet a été traité dans la science-fiction des années 1920 et 1950, afin de le mettre en contraste avec l’approche contemporaine. Nous choisissons de discuter pour cela des romans et des films qui ont captivé l’imagination populaire à l’échelle mondiale.

In this paper we analyze the fears and hopes automation has generated in popular culture from the time the term “robot” was first used to the present period of media hype. We consider the extent to which hopes and fears have changed and whether changes reflect actual changes in robotics. We analyze how this topic was treated in science fiction of the 1920s and 1950s and contrast it with today’s presentation. We discuss selected novels and films that have captured popular imagination on a worldwide scale.
