RÉSUMÉ Le retard mental est, pour les psychologues, une notion en évolution autant dans sa définition que dans sa compréhension scientifique. Il est aujourd’hui étudié en intégrant les apports de la psychologie cognitive, de la neuropsychologie, mais il est aussi discuté à la lumière des définitions générales du handicap. La proposition interactive du modèle social de la Classification internationale du fonctionnement, du handicap et de la santé ouvre alors des perspectives nouvelles.

SUMMARY The status of mental handicap : An interactive approach of children that develop differently. For psychologists, the mental retardation notion undergoes rapid changes in its definition as well as in its scientific understanding. Nowadays, mental retardation is studied by integrating the contribution of cognitive psychology and neuropsychology. Moreover, mental retardation is also discussed in the light of handicap definitions. Thus interactive models of handicap initiate new fields for research.
