Identity Development in adolescence: Which advances in research for vocational guidance? The development of professional choices is part of identity formation during adolescence. One of the main directions of research is Erikson’s Ego Identity approach. This article aims at presenting two neo-Eriksonian models of adolescent and emerging adulthood identity construction. Additionally, recent advances stemming from the study of developmental trajectories of identity are summarized. One model is based on the description of a “dual- cycle model” composed of a first cycle of identity formation concerned with exploration in breadth and commitment making, and a second cycle dealing with identity evaluation (exploration in depth and identification with commitment). A second model relies on a continuous interaction process between commitment, reconsideration of commitment and in-depth exploration. Those models inspired a new tool: the vocational identity assessment (VISA) currently translated in French. VISA allows improved orientation and adjustment to each adolescent and young adult’s situation.
