RésuméEn Islande, pays industrialisé, matérialiste et respirant la prospérité, une place importante est faite à ce que nous appelons communément le « surnaturel ». C’est d’elfes dont il est question ici, êtres de la nature que l’on s’attachera à identifier à travers le regard de ceux qui les voient ou se les imaginent. Comprendre leur rôle dans la société islandaise d’aujourd’hui est une façon d’analyser le rapport d’une société à son environnement et, davantage encore, au monde.

In Iceland, an industrialized materialistic country that radiates prosperity an important place is made to what is commonly called « supernatural ». We are concerned here with elfs, those natural beings that we try to identify through the vision of those who « see » them or imagine them. Understanding their role in the Icelandic society of today is a way to analyze the relationships of a society with its environment and even more with the world.

ZusammenfassungIn Island, einem industrialisierten materialistischen Land, das den Wohlstand ausstrahlt, wird einen bedeutenden Platz dem gewidmet, was gewöhnlich als « Übernatürlichen » genannt wird. Es handelt sich hier um Elfen, jene Wesen der Natur, die durch den Blick derer identifiziert werden, die sie « sehen » oder sie sich vorstellen. Das Verständnis ihrer Rolle in der heutigen isländischen Gesellschaft erlaubt uns, das Verhältnis einer Gesellschaft zu ihrer Umgebung und sogar zu der Welt zu analysieren.
