RésuméLes critiques divergent lorsqu’ils tentent d’établir les affinités religieuses de Trollope. Sa vive condamnation des scandales qui discréditaient alors la High Church traditionnelle permet d’exclure un quelconque soutien à ce parti. Une étude attentive des textes et de la biographie révèle en revanche de nettes sympathies tractariennes. Cela dit, on trouve malgré tout chez lui des positions publiques en faveur de la Broad Church, ce qui pose problème étant donné l’hostilité mutuelle de ces deux partis.Une étude chronologique tenant compte de la biographie et du climat intellectuel révèle toutefois un cheminement de la pensée de l’auteur à partir de positions initialement conservatrices vers des vues franchement libérales, les années 1865-1866 apparaissant comme une période de transition.

Critics rarely agree when assessing Trollope’s religious affinities. His scathing denunciation of the scandals then discrediting the High Church clearly shows he did not in the least support that party. A careful examination of his works and biography reveals his Tractarian sympathies but also, paradoxically, his support of the Broad Church, a party at odds with Newman and his followers.However, a chronological study of his writings, supported by a consideration of both his biography and the changes in the intellectual climate, brings to light Trollope’s progression from initially conservative views to a distinctly liberal outlook in the second half of his career, the years 1865-1866 appearing as a period of transition.
