RésuméCet article examine la façon quasi « obsessionnelle » avec laquelle le personnel du Constance Hospital d’Easterneuk en Écosse, notamment les brancardiers, procède à la classification de leur environnement dans leur milieu hospitalier. Menant son enquête de terrain en travaillant lui-même comme brancardier, l’auteur relate son expérience. Il décrit comment une identité classificatoire apparemment arbitraire est attribuée aux personnes et aux choses, mais aussi le plaisir et même la passion que suscite cette pratique. Il montre qu’en empruntant à l’institution ce que l’on peut considérer comme le discours archétypique de la distinction, la discipline, la hiérarchie et l’administration hospitalières, la « communauté des brancardiers » fait une satire subversive de l’ordre établi. Ce faisant, elle revêt l’apparence d’une république sécessionniste dont chaque membre exercerait un pouvoir existentiel individuel.

This article gives an account of the « fetichistic » way in which employees at Constance Hospital, Easterneuk, Scotland, especially the hospital porters, classified the world around them – the immediate world of the hospital in particular. Conducting fieldwork as a hospital porter himself, the author recounts his experience of the apparently arbitrary ways in which people and things were assigned a classificatory identity, and also the pleasure and the vehemence with which the classifications were attested. An argument is put forward that in this borrowing of what might be regarded as the archetypal discourse of Hospital distinction, discipline, hierarchy and administration, a subverting and satirizing of Hospital order was effected, « the portering community » borrowing the trappings of a secessionist republic and its individual members exercising an existential power.

ZusammenfassungDieser Artikel examiniert die beinahe obsessive Weise mit der das Personal des Krankenhauses Constance von Easterneuk in Schottland und unter ihnen die Krankenträger ihre ummittelbare Umgebung im Kankenhaus klassifizieren. Der Autor führte seine Feldarbeit als Krankenträger in diesem Krankenhaus durch und erzählt seine Erfahrung. Er beschreibt die anscheinend willkürliche Klassifizierungsidentität, die den Leuten und Dingen zugewiesen wird und die Lust und Leidenschaftlichkeit, welche diese Praxis erregt.
