RésuméDans la seconde moitié du xixe siècle, la question de l’ambiguïté sexuelle préoccupe les médecins, qui y portent un intérêt étonnamment important, étant donné la rareté des cas. Dans le double cadre théorique du positivisme et de l’évolutionnisme, ils développent une réflexion renouvelée sur le sujet, qui trahit leur inquiétudes en même temps que leurs définition du masculin et du féminin.

In the second half of the xixth century, the question of sexual ambiguity worries doctors who, strangely enough, demonstrate a strong interest in the matter, despite the scarcity of such occurrences. In the double theoretical framework of positivism and evolutionism, they develop a renewed reflection on the subject, which betrays their anxieties at the same time as its provides their definition of the masculine and of the feminine.

ZusammenfassungTrotz der Seltenheit der Fälle, beschäftigt die Frage der Doppelgeschlechtlichkeit die Mediziner in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts besonders stark. Vor dem Hintergrund des Positivismus sowie der Evolutionstheorie entwickelt die Medizin eine neue Herangehensweise an die Thematik, die deutlich sowohl ihre Unsicherheiten als auch ihre Definition ihres Verständnisses von männlich und weiblich verrät.
