RésuméEn transposant le mythe wildien dans l’Angleterre des années quatre-vingt, Will Self expose sur le mode de la satire les ravages de la pensée magique diffusée par nos réalités virtuelles : le portrait de Dorian Gray est devenu Cathode Narcissus, œuvre conceptuelle qui focalise l’amour de l’image de soi fondé sur une « dé-réalisation » du corps, un oubli de sa dimension mortelle. Mais le rêve d’inversion magique se retourne en cauchemar, le réel escamoté fait violemment retour. En réponse à la crédulité généralisée (« erection of credulousness ») qui fonde les scénarios imaginaires où se noie la passion de Dorian élargie à toute une société vouée au faire réel virtuel, le romancier œuvrera à réhabiliter l’art et la ruse de la fiction : il s’agit de remettre au goût du jour l’écran du faire semblant consenti ( willing suspension of disbelief) qui redonne du jeu au jeu, antidote possible à la folie de Narcisse.

By transposing the myth of Dorian Gray into the England of the 1980’s, Will Self satirically exposes the ravages of magic thinking spread by our virtual realities : the picture of Dorian has become Cathode Narcissus, the conceptual work of art which focalises the love of one’s self-image with its correlate: the “de-realization” of the human body whose mortal dimension is denied. But the dream of magic inversion becomes a nightmare, the real which the narcissistic dream wanted to avoid returns. Dorian’s tragic passion has spread itself to a whole society drowning in the imaginary scenarios of its virtual realities. To the general “erection of credulousness,” Will Self prefers the cunning art of fiction: what is at stake is the rehabilitation of the willing suspension of disbelief, the screenplay of fantasy as a possible antidote to Narcissus’ madness.
