RésuméLes fêtes populaires offrent un champ d’observation très propice à l’étude des processus de construction de la valeur patrimoniale, tant du point de vue institutionnel que du point de vue communautaire. Elles semblent, en effet, jouer un rôle de plus en plus important dans les économies locales qui misent sur leur patrimoine immatériel. Ces fêtes sont aussi l’objet d’une tension entre un désir d’appropriation, qui conforte le sentiment d’appartenance et d’identification à la localité, et un désir d’attraction, voire de séduction, pour attirer les visiteurs et rentabiliser le développement local. Le carnaval de Québec, une fête populaire hivernale et urbaine, est un terrain privilégié pour examiner cette tension entre l’événement touristique et la fête locale. En définitive, touristification et patrimonialisation sont les deux actes d’une même pièce qui se joue dans certaines fêtes populaires.

Popular festivals have proven to be a very propitious field of observation for the study of the processes in constructing heritage value, as much from the institutional perspective as from the point of view of the community. Such festivals are also a subject of tension between a desire for appropriation, which reinforces the feeling of belonging and identification with a locality, and a desire for attraction, indeed seduction, with a view to bringing in visitors and promoting profitable local development. The Quebec Carnival, a popular urban winter festival, is particularly favourable ground for examining this tension between tourist event and local party, which assumes that various stakes are involved. Clearly, promoting tourism and creating heritage value are two acts in a single play performed through certain festivals, as seems to be the case with the Quebec Carnival.

ZusammenfassungVolksfeste sind ein dankbares Feld für die Beobachtung von Prozessen der Konstruktion nationaler Werte, sowohl aus institutioneller als auch aus gemeinschaftlicher Sicht. Denn sie spielen eine zunehmend wichtigere Rolle für die lokale Wirtschaft und somit auch für das immaterielle Erbe. Allerdings wohnen den Festen auch zunehmend Spannungen inne. Spannungen zum Beispiel zwischen dem Wunsch nach Zugehörigkeit zu einer bestimmten lokalen Identität und dem Wunsch nach Anziehung oder Verführung – im Sinne der Notwendigkeit Besucher anzulocken und die lokale Wirtschaft anzukurbeln. Der Quebecer Karneval, ein winterliches, urbanes Volksfest, ist ein gutes Terrain um dieses Spannungsfeld zwischen touristischer Attraktion und Fest der Einheimischem zu untersuchen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Tourismus und Tradition nicht nur in Quebec zwei Seiten der gleichen Medaille sind.
