RésuméDans les études comparatives sur la religion en Europe de l’Ouest, l’Irlande se détache comme une société où la religion reste importante, alors même que, par ailleurs, son déclin est évident. S’interrogeant sur les raisons de ce double phénomène de continuité et de déclin, l’article s’intéresse à la minorité protestante de la République irlandaise, en particulier aux protestants de la partie occidentale du comté de Cork.

In comparative studies of religion in Western Europe, Ireland stands out as a society where religion is still important. Today, decline is also evident. This paper asks how this dual aspect – persistence and decline – is to be explained. It focuses on the Protestant minority in the Republic of Ireland, and more specifically on the Protestants of West Cork.

ZusammenfassungIn vergleichenden Studien über die Bedeutung von Religion in Westeuropa sticht Irland als eine Gesellschaft hervor in der Religion bis heute bedeutend ist – selbst wenn sie in anderen Gesellschaften an Bedeutung verliert. Mit diesem doppelten Phänomen der gleichbleibenden und der abnehmenden Bedeutung von Religion beschäftigt sich dieser Artikel. Dazu untersucht er die protestantische Minderheit Irlands, insbesondere in der Grafschaft Cork.
