Les grands changements sur les plans socio-économique et politique intervenus en Croatie avec l’abandon du socialisme au début des années 1990 n’ont pas eu beaucoup d’incidences sur les pratiques et les valeurs relatives à la participation des gens « ordinaires » à l’économie informelle. Le présent article se propose d’illustrer ethnographiquement cette thèse et de l’examiner dans le contexte du plein-emploi socialiste et dans l’actuelle situation de chômage. Il attire l’attention sur l’importance d’une analyse culturelle de l’économie informelle qui révèle les motivations sociales et symboliques de ceux qui y prennent part.

“I Manage”. Informal Economy and Unemployment in CroatiaSeminal socio-economic and political changes that occurred in Croatia with the disappearance of socialism at the beginning of the 1990s have not changed much the structures –in the domain of practices and values– linked to the participation of “ordinary” people in the informal economy. The article aims at illustrating ethnographically this hypothesis and analysing it in the context of full employment in socialism and contemporary unemployment. It draws attention to the importance of cultural analysis of informal economy and stresses social and symbolic motivations for participation in the sphere of informal economy.

Die großen sozio-ökonomischen und politischen Veränderungen, die das Ende des Sozialismus Anfang der 1990er Jahre in Kroatien mit sich gebracht hat, haben die Mitwirkung der „einfachen“Leute am informellen Wirtschaftssektor nicht verändert. Der vorliegende Artikel illustriert diese Behauptung auf ethnographische Art und Weise vor dem Hintergrund sozialistischer Vollbeschäftigung und aktueller Arbeitslosigkeit. Er betont dabei die Wichtigkeit einer kulturellen Analyse des informellen Sektors, die die soziale und gemeinnützige Motivation der Einzelnen besonders hervorhebt.
