Au début des années 1950, Alcide De Gasperi s’est engagé de manière décisive pour l’unification politique de l’Europe. La paix est au centre de ses préoccupations et il voit dans la fédération européenne un « mythe de paix ». En partageant les idées des fédéralistes européens, il est allé bien au-delà d’une adhésion générique au projet de Communauté de défense (CED) proposé par les Français. Il s’est battu avec ténacité pour lier l’armée européenne à la création d’une Communauté politique, et donc à la naissance d’une « patrie européenne », et pour transformer l’approche fonctionnaliste en approche fédéraliste.

In the early fifties, Alcide De Gasperi made a decisive commitment for the political unification of Europe. Peace was at the centre of his concerns, and he saw the European federation as a “myth of peace.” Sharing the ideas of the federalists, he went beyond the project of a European Defence Community proposed by the French. He fought tenaciously to link the European Army to the creation of a European political Community, and therefore to the birth of a “European homeland,” and to transform the functional approach into a federalist approach.
