In this article, the author shows how writing, used as therapeutic mediation, can help with symbolic restoration when thinking and dreaming capacities are blocked by traumatic events. Through cinema and literary illustrations, and based upon Sigmund Freud’s work, she demonstrates how, just like in the dreaming process, the therapeutic work of writing can help transform traumatic experiences and play a role in fixing psychological outbreaks. The creative process can be a possible way to deal with the trauma and can help transform the nightmare and unutterable into a speakable representation. Through a clinical case, the author also discusses how dreaming and writing mediation can be fundamental levers in the therapeutic process.
