RésuméDans sa contribution, Thomas Lindenberger propose de dépasser la structuration duelle de l’historiographie de la RDA entre, d’une part, une histoire politique centrée sur l’appareil répressif et fondée sur les fonds du parti et de la police secrète et, d’autre part, une histoire sociale et culturelle fondée, elle, sur les fonds des « organisations de masse », des entreprises, etc. De fait, les approches qui tentent de réconcilier les deux grandes orientations se sont avérées les plus fructueuses pour la mise en place d’une histoire sociale du politique de la RDA. Ce choix implique, pour l’historien, le travail sur des fonds d’archives les plus diversifiés possibles qui ne sauraient se limiter aux legs de la Stasi. L’auteur développe ensuite l’exemple de l’appréhension de la jeunesse par le régime et démontre que celle-ci demeurerait biaisée sans l’apport des fonds de la « police populaire » ( Volkspolizei) qui apportent un éclairage bien plus nuancé et différencié que ceux de la Stasi, aussi bien du point de vue répressif que de celui d’une histoire de la jeunesse en dictature.

In his contribution, Thomas Lindenberger proposes to go beyond the dual structuring of GDR historiography caught between, on the one hand, a political history focused on the repressive machinery, based on party and secret police, and, on the other hand, social and cultural history based on documents pertaining to “mass organisations”, companies, etc. Indeed, approaches that attempt to combine these two general orientations have proved more fruitful for the actual writing of the social and political history of the GDR. For the historian, the choice implies working on as wide a variety of archive collections as possible, which must not be limited to the legacy of the Stasi alone. The author goes on to discuss the example of the regime’s fear of young people. He shows how this view would remain distorted without the contribution of the archives of the “popular police” ( Volkspolizei), which provide a far more qualified, differentiated perception than those of the Stasi, not only from the standpoint of repression but also that of a history of young people under dictatorship.
