The ultrasound ritual in a maternity ward. The non-human, the virtual child, and the parenthood process

The non-human environment in the everyday relational landscape is prominent but seems too often worthless for the work of subjectification. A careful clinical observation demonstrates the contrary: it is all the more a part of the essence of psychic reality and human bonds that, in a negative sense, it is manifestly repressed or denied. The usual scenario of obstetric ultrasounds is a typical illustration of this paradox: a perception that is banalizing threatens to transform it into a support for alienation, precisely where the recognition of its eminent role in the construction and creativity of links ought to allow it a civilizing and supportive role. A clinical narrative will testify to these conflicts, which are the source of both the best and the worst.
