The institution and its ghosts

Based upon the works of Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok, several psychoanalysts have noted that patients present a “crypt in the Ego” and/or a “ghost work.” However, the institutional impact of these theoretico-clinical entities is rarely studied. The author, a psychologist in a rehabilitation center, presents several hypothesis through a clinical case study, concluding that there exists a double necessity: institutions must abolish the cult of secrecy, and must encourage caregivers to identify and work collectively on psychological “ghosts” which affect the capacity of addicts to live fully.
